Work is about completed on the 1870 annotated census of Wayne County.  This is an entirely new publication produced by members of the society.   It has required several months of research, but is very well annotated. It is being published in dual format.  First is an alphabetical listing, followed by a listing in the original format, that is, by districts.  This maintains the person in his neighborhood.  With the alphabetical listing, there is no need for an index.   This volume should be ready by mid February, 2004.  The price will be $45 PP.

Aslo just completed is a reprint of the Hardesty's History of Wayne County, WV originally published in 1884.  There was a colored map of Wayne County in the original publication and it has been reproduced for this volume. Also an index has been added.  I think most are aware that the Hardesty Books are nearly impossible to find, so this is a real opportunity to own your own copy.  It contains marvelous historical facts of early Wayne County along with extensive family information.  A must for the serious researcher.   Price is $25 PP

There has been a new book published on the descendants of the Kirk family of the Big Sandy area.  The book may be ordered from Gene H. Shupe, 106 Redwood Road, Bristol, TN  37620-6037.  The price per copy is $35.00, including postage.  It is a limited edition, so orders need to be sent soon.

We have several additions to our library, which is open on thursdays from noon until 5 p.m. I recently donated a microfilm reader to the library, and we have several rolls of microfilm which were donated by Harry Leon Sellards. These are mostly census and tax rolls. Mr. Renick D. Perry, a local accountant, has donated a very nice 400 MH H/P computer to our society. I added a new hard drive to the unit and it is now working and installed at the library. He has also donated two additional computers for our use. We have a family database program installed, along with word processing capabilities. If you desire to donate your family history to be added, please send by GEDCOM file if possible. If not, send by email to WCGHS, and we will enter the information. Will be nice to create a large database of Wayne County persons for research purposes. There are also available a large number of CD ROM research disks donated by one of our members, Jim Goode. Additional CD ROM disks and other material has been donated by another member, James S. Ferguson. We are making progress !There is a

Below is a picture of the Josiah Marcum roadside marker. It is quite large, and beautifully done. It is constructed of cast aluminum. We are now taking donations for a similar sign honoring Samuel Ferguson, another of our Revolutionary War Soldiers.  The cost is approximately $1300.00. Samuel is buried near Wayne WV.

The Society has now made a committment to research and publish a book on the Napier Family of Wayne County. We are in the early planning stages, the project could well take a year to completion. With two manuscripts, each containing over 500 pages, to work with it would seem we have a very good start. However, a multitude of work remains, and we will direct all our efforts into this project as quickly as the 1920 census is completed. It is hopeful that all of you who have any information applicable will be forthcoming in sending it to the society, helping with this great project. We will soon be posting a page to this site, dealing entirely with the Napier Book.

The Dyer Book has been reprinted, and is now available from Curtis Dyer. Please check the book list for his address, and order directly from him.

The 1920 census sold out, but has been reprinted and ready for delivery. We are taking orders now. This is a great publication, covering over two years work by the society. It is about 85% annotated, a must for anyone researching in Wayne County. Price is $60 picked up in Wayne, or $65 mailed in continental USA
