non-athlete members} WILL BE posted as soon as the UCAT Swimming Office completes
the 2001-2002 registration process and the UCAT Office receives the printout. [NOTE:
a copy of the 2000-2001 USA registrations is posted!]. Updates will be posted as soon as

divided into two (2) parts with each an "ID" label identifying each handout! The
handouts printed on white paper are basically "informational" type handouts while hand-
outs printed on colored paper are "specific" type handouts for each UCAT Program.

07) Regarding the Annual UCAT Awards Banquet, swimmers that are no longer "actively"
participating on the team will have their awards mailed to them NO LATER THAN
Monday, May 21ST. Also, a list of the award recipients will be posted on the club's

PRESIDENT'S CORNER / BILL COYLE

01) A special "thanks" to two parents whose children are graduating this year and
who have devoted significant time and effort to our program. Fran Rinaldi has been
Board Vice-President and chaired the Concession & Scholarship Committees. Donna
Thompson has coordinated the parents work requirements @ swim meets and has been the
"voice" of UCAT at our home swim meets. Please take time to thank both of them for
their years of dedication to the UCAT Program.

02) The results of the Spring elections are as follows for a 3 year term of office:

                                ** Bill Coyle
                                ** Mark Davis
                                ** Randy McCormick
                                ** Clare Wegmann

Results of election of officers at the May Board Meeting are as follows:

                                ** Bill Coyle, President
                                ** Jeff Northcutt, Vice-President
                                ** Mark Kauffelt, Secretary
                                ** VACANT, Treasurer

Thanks again to the Board for showing their confidence in me to continue as
President. However, with the support of the coaches and parents, this job is not
that difficult and it is very enjoyable.

03) Congratulations to the coaches & swimmers for their efforts at Y Nationals.
Although we did not achieve all of the goals set by the coaches and team, the team
represented the UCAT/Y program well and look forward to long course Y Nationals in
early August.

04) As a continued REMINDER, any questions or comments you might have about the
UCAT Program, I would appreciate these being addressed to either one of the Gregs;
to me; or to any Board member. We cannot respond to any issues if we are not aware
of them. We also are more than willing to discuss, or explain, any rules or
policies. Whenever we make a "major" change to our program, they are discussed at a
Board Meeting and we make the decision that we believe is best for the program as a
whole and not just a particular swimmer or team.

COACH'S CORNER/GREG OLSON = DIRECTOR/HEAD COACH

01) PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE continue to refer to the many announcements listed on
pages #1-2 of the newsletter for important club information AND to the Swim Meet
News section at the end of the newsletter = THANK YOU!!! Also, please read and
"look at" the many items that are either posted on the UCAT Bulletin Board; the
windows; the UCAT "Announcement Window;" the plastic file folders; and the table
which is located outside the UCAT Swimming Office.

02) The UCAT Swimming Program successfully defended their team title @ the UCAT Odd
Age Group Meet the weekend of March 22nd-24th @ UC and went
undefeated with the four UCAT Meets (3 @ Charleston and 1 @ Huntington). The Y
National team traveled to Ft Lauderdale, FL with very high expectations and was
unable to achieve some of their goals. The girls finished 22nd; boys 39th & over-
all 23rd, which were improvements from 2001. Everyone (swimmers & coaches) will
need to re-examine the work that we did; how we approached the meet & how we were
able to come back from a disappointing swim.

03) The first major swimming meet of the 2002 Summer Season will be this weekend in
Lexington, KY when we send about 45 swimmers to the Wildcat Aquatic Spring Classic @
UK. The next meet will be the CAC Summer Classic in Oxford, OH @ Miami of Ohio.

The Abingdon Meet will be the weekend of July 5th-7th @ Abingdon, VA. They are
running 2 age groups = AM session for 12-Unders and PM session for 13-Overs. They
will split the 2 age groups up for scoring & awards into the traditional age groups:
8-UN; 9-10; 11-12; 13-14 & Senior.

04) As a REMINDER, the 2002 Summer Long Course Swim Meet schedule is avaialble for
pick-up from the plastic file folders located outside the UCAT Swimming Office.
Again, PLEASE pay very close attention to the EARLY ENTRY DEADLINE DATES for the
swim meets that the UCAT Swimming Office has designated as "Team Meets." The UCAT
Swimming Office needs additional time (days) to prepare the entries and send them to
the host club in order for our swimmers to be accepted into the meet. During the
Summer Swim Season, swim meets tend to "fill-up" much faster and UCAT's entries have
not been accepted @ several meets during the past 4-5 years.

05) Sometime beginning the week of June 10th, I will post a sign-up sheet for motel rooms for the WV State Meet the weekend of July 26th-28th@ OU
in Athens, OH. We will be staying @ the OU Inn. You MUST sign up on the "sign-up sheet"
in order to be sure that you will have a room!!!

06) I would like to say "thank you" to both Ellen Cipoletti & Jane Dinges for their
help & assistance during Cindy's absence. Without both of them helping with the
Developmental Team Programs, both Greg Lake & I would not have been able to do
justice to the Developmental Teams and the Competitive Teams at the same time.
Again, "thank you" Ellen & Jane!!!

07) Congratulations to our graduating seniors: Tommy Bird from Capital HS going to
Pitt; Karen Rinaldi from Nitro HS going to WVU; and Stacy Thompson from Nitro HS
going to NYU.

07) Please continue to "look at/read" the swim meet information packets that have
been posted on the bulletin board. Also, refer to the "message board" for updated
entry deadline dates, etc. We have many, many meets coming up in Nov/Dec and the
UCAT Coaching Staff does not want any swimmer to be omitted from any meet that
he/she wants to attend.

08) Greg does not know when he will be able to resume his "STROKE LESSONS" but he
definitely will start again in September, earlier if at all possible. Look for the
sign-up sheets posted on Mondays when Greg is "in" town to have a stroke clinic.

09) As a reminder, the UCAT Swimming Office has placed some swimming related reading
materials on the right side (bottom row) of the plastic file folders located directly
outside the UCAT Office. These materials are for your enjoyment but PLEASE return
them when you have finished so other UCAT members may enjoy them = THANK YOU!! We
have also posted several recent articles for your information. Comments are always welcomed!

10) In each newsletter the UCAT Coaching Staff has the opportunity to communicate to the UCAT membership about items that we feel are important, not only as they relate to
swimming, but also as they relate to the over-all growth and development of your child
as an individual! PLEASE take the time to read the information that we present, and
if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask!!

Please read the entire newsletter, especially sections entitled "Announcements"
and "Swim Meet News." Under the "Swim Meet News" section, we will update the swim
meet list with each newsletter.

11) ALL UCAT Coaches want to be able to talk to each and every parent but during
practice MAY NOT be the best time to do it! PLEASE allow the UCAT Coaching Staff to
perform their coaching duties with minimal interruptions and if you need to discuss a
topic with any UCAT Coach, call the Swimming Office at 357-4825 = THANK YOU!!! If you
need to purchase goggles or a swim suit, please see/talk to Greg Olson during your
child's practice.

COACH'S CORNER/GREG LAKE = HEAD AGE GROUP COACH

01) I would like to congratulate everyone on an excellent 'Spring Season'. Once
again I was very proud and excited by the success of both the swimmers on Comp 1 and
Comp 2. I hope we can build upon this success and have a great summer. A few of the
highlights of the 'Spring Season' were: 1st Place at the Short Course State Meet &
4th Place finish at the Great Lake Zones Championship. I was extremely pleased with
the results at the Zone Meet, we brought one of the smallest teams in the last 4 years
and maintained our place in the team standings.

02) This season saw three swimmers from the Comp 2 program achieve Top 16
consideration times: Travis Green (9-10, 50 Back), Staci Drury (11-12, 200 Breast), &
Natalie Northcutt (11-12, 1650 Free, 100 & 200 Fly, 200 Back, & 400 IM)
CONGRATULATIONS! We also saw some Y Cluster records set from swimmers in both Comp 1
& Comp 2. The swimmers who achieved these records were: Thomas Moore (8-Under, 100
Free), Travis Green (9-10, 50 Back), 9-10 200 Med. Relay [Travis Green, Tommy Skeleton
{Hunt.}, Ryan Lucci, & Alex Ross], 9-10 200 Free Relay [Travis Green, Tommy Skeleton
{Hunt.}, Trey McGraw, & Alex Ross], Natalie Northcutt (11-12, 50 Fly), & 11-12 Girls
200 Free Relay [Alexia Cornett {Hunt.}, Shaleen Doctor {Hunt.}, Natalie Northcutt, &
Caitlin Cook]. NICE JOB!

03) I am very excited for the upcoming 'Summer Season'. I hope all of you look at
the summer meet schedule and plan to swim a meet prior to the Summer Long Course
Championships (Athens, OH - July 26th-28th). I think it would be greatly advantageous
to swim in a meet prior to the 'State Meet'. If you are not aware the entries for
summer meets are due meet very early due to the lack of meets in the area. Make sure
that you look at the entry deadline and get your entries in early.

04) I would like to STONGLY encourage all Competitive Swimmers to attend as many
practices as possible at Coonskin. Comp 2 will start going out to the pool the week
of May 27th, in the evenings. The regular summer schedule will begin Friday, June
7th (Comp 1 begins @ Coonskin). Since the WV State Meet is in a long course pool (50
meters) it would be to the benefit of Comp swimmers to practice as often as possible
at Coonskin.

COACH'S CORNER/CINDY HEMSWORTH = DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS

01) REMINDER swimmer's = please remember to bring your goggles to practice. Girls
please wear a swim cap or make sure that your hair is tied back; some of you are still
running into the lane ropes because you cannot see.

02) Summer is approaching and I know that most of you want to start swimming with your
local swim club; that is fine, but remember that you will not get as much practice as
you do here at UC. The teams are larger and many people use the swim team as 'swimming
lessons.' If you find yourself not happy with your practices; feel free to start
practicing with me in the mornings; you can still do your meets on Wednesday night.

03) The summer season "practice schedule" for the Developmental Teams will be from
June 7, 2002 to August 9, 2002. Friday, August 9th will be a Novice Meet.

04) Parents of the Gold Team, I would like to start swimming with the swimmers two or
three times during the week. If you feel that this is a problem, please let me know.
Thank you!!

UCAT BOARD OF DIRECTORS NEWS

01) Our JUNE Board Meeting will be on MON, JUN 17TH starting @ 6:45PM; Geary
Student Union Building; 3rd floor; either room #301 or #308 or #317; UC campus. ANY
UCAT parent welcome to attend the meeting. There will be NO scheduled meeting during
the month of April. The next scheduled Board Meeting will be ON, JUL 15TH!

SWIMMER REP NEWS

01) The swimmer representatives for the 2001-2002 Swimming Season as elected by the
swimmers are: Comp Team 3 members Sarah Coyle & Bridget Melvin; Comp 2 member Caitlin
Cook. "New" elections for the 2002-2003 Swimming Season for Comp 3 are as follows:
Sarah Coyle & Michael Northcutt. Comp 2 will hold their elections the week of May
21st.

02) Recently two members of the Comp 3 Team got the chance to do something they
thought would be an "easy" way to make practice more fun; they got to make the
practice for the day. They didn't realize at the time, however, what a challenging
thing it was to do. Often we tend to take our coaches for granted. We don't always
look past what they do on deck and see all the time they put in "behind the scenes"
making practices, working on tapers and trying to figure out ways to fix a bad habit
in a swimmer's stroke. We all need to realize how difficult it is to spend so much
time doing something you love so much (and get paid so little for) and then not be
respected for it. Almost all of us are guilty of, at one time or another, talking
back to or questioning our coaches. We need to realize just how frustrating their job
can be and try to respect them more. If all of us could work on just doing what we
are here to do and let our coaches do their job, our practices and our team could run
much more smoothly.

Sarah Coyle & Bridget Melvin from Comp 3; Caitlin Cook from Comp 2

UCAT COLLEGE SWIMMERS NEWS

01) Several UCAT college swimmers have returned to practice with the UCAT Program:
Brett Hansen (Denison College); Chad Jones (Rhodes College) for the month of May until
he returns to school for an internship during the summer; Melissa Melvin (Fairmont
State College); and Pamela Melvin (John Carroll University). Rachel Oakes (Fairmont
State College) should be starting soon. Welcome back!!!

02) Mary Alice Bird graduated from WV Wesleyan College and Melissa Olson from
University of Kentucky = CONGRAUULATIONS!!!

SWIM TEAM NEWS

01) There are several handouts explaining swim meet competition and "how" to enter a
swim meet = they are available from the plastic file folder! If you have any
questions, PLEASE talk to a member of the UCAT Coaching Staff for the most accurate
information (hear it from the "horse's mouth")!!! The Swim Meet List handout will be
updated each month in the newsletter and it will list the swim meets for the next 6-8
week period. The list in the newsletter will be the "official list" since it will
include the most up-to-date information that is available to the UCAT Swimming Office
AND it will include any changes in the information that was published in the original
list.

02) The UCAT Swimming Office reminds the UCAT community of the upcoming Janet Evans
Clinic to be held on Saturday, June 1st @ UC. Please submit your payment
of $25.00 (made payable to "UC) as soon as possible to the UCAT Swimming Office.
