Links

We have links here to a number of web sites that may be of interest. We’ll start out with some of the topical ones first, then go on to links to web sites run by organizations we like and then, finally, human rights links.

Topical Links
Martin Luther King, Jr. gave this speech in 1967 against the Vietnam war. It is a good starting point for examining the basic issues of war.
This is the Reuters Foundation web site for information about humanitarian work, problems and news updates.
The National Gulf War Resource Center web site focuses on US veterans’ issues for the last Gulf War. It is critical of many Defense Department activities at times, at times not.
The Sunshine Project is devoted to exposing the proliferation of biological weapons, though they also provide information about chemical weapons, especially “non-lethal” chemical weapons that the US is developing.
Vietnam Inc., a book of photographs and captions by Philip Griffiths is to George’s mind one of the best books about the Vietnam war.
The Sixties Project has Winter Soldier testimony given in Detroit in 1971.
Terry Gross’s Fresh Air on NPR sometimes has very good interviews with people involved with or knowledgeable about current events. This interview with Chris Hedges (from 18 March) is a good one (uses RealPlayer).
STAAAMP Survivors Take Action Against Abuse by Military Personnel is a web site about sexual and physical abuse by military personnel to their spouses, girl friends or others they come in contact with. The rate of domestic violence among the military is 5 times that of the civilian population.
Institute for War and Peace Reporting is an organization based in London. They have a portion of their web site devoted to events in Iraq.

Organizations We Like

Poets Against the War web site is great.
Code Pink is a web site devoted to activism by women against the war in Iraq.

Not In Our Name is an organization based on resistance to the war effort.

Human Rights Links
Civilian deaths in the air war in Afghanistan are largely ignored by the news media. The author of this article examines the subject exhaustively.
Amnesty International is a well known human rights organization. They have devoted a portion of their web site to the Iraq crisis.
Human Rights Watch is another well known human rights organization that has also devoted a portion of their web site to Iraq. The publications about military campaigns in the past by allied members are good.
UN High Commissioner of Human Rights has links to treaties and other documents relating to human rights here.
Crimes of War Project has a well organized web site with lots of information about the nature of war crimes and detailed examination of specific crimes and issues.
