The Gas Well

In early September 2008 we learned that a company wished to drill a gas well on our property. Since the mineral rights had been separated from the surface rights some time in the past and we just owned the surface rights to our land there wasn't much we could do about it.

This spurred our interest in finding out as much as we can about gas wells, drilling, and state and federal regulations.

Our blog at LiveJournal along with the News section of this site offers updates as to what we've discovered. The LiveJournal blog is also an archive of all our past posts (the News section of this site just retains the most current).

As of now it seems that the company will not be drilling on our property for the next year or two at least as it focuses its attentions elsewhere.

The Existing Gas Well
Devoted to a gas well that already exists between the hard road and our property. In February 2009 a bulldozer was used to get a vac truck to and from the existing well site and we documented the damage done to the earth road. In April of 2010 the road was repaired and upgraded with a fully-graveled four-season surface.

Reclamation
We discuss, using photographs of actual well sites, the process of constructing an access road and the site before drilling to final revegetation.

Gas Well Study
We began to examine a number of gas wells in 2008 and the Gas Well Study is the result. The Study is ongoing so other pertinent information and updates will be available here also.

Drilling Waste Management
We've been collecting materials and presenting information about drilling waste management for our blog and we've begun to tie everything together here.

Two sections in Drilling Waste Management deal with incidents related to problems with the state's waste management program. What Happened at Fernow examines the state's land application program of liquid waste where the destruction of forest vegetation (including trees) occurred. The Spill at Buckeye Creek examines the contamination of West Union's drinking water supply by pit waste.

This section of the site is devoted to the gas well that is going to be drilled on our property along with our research and findings.
