We've begun an examination of drilling waste pits on our blog and some of the content has also spilled over onto this website. Eventually, all the material will be here.

We have a post on our blog about Pit Liners, the geomembrane material that is used as a barrier between the liquids and solids in the pit and the environment.

We have a post on our blog about Pits, emphasizing where we think West Virginia's pit regulations are lacking.

West Virginia's existing pit regulations as found in the state's Code of State Regulations, General Water Pollution Control Permit and the Erosion and Sedimentation Control Field Manual.

We've created these recommendations toward a revision of the current regulations. The recommendations are written as if they were regulations, focusing on permits, siting, construction, operation and closure.

The state is in the process of making changes to the portion of the Code of State Regulations that pertains to pits. The changed regulation can be seen here and our comments for those changes and changes we believe are lacking but are necessary can be viewed here (a Word 97 file).

It should be noted that there are no regulations in regards to the proper disposal of solid waste held in pits. Normally this is buried on site but again there no requirements to keep this potentially toxic material sequestered from the environment.
