Molly’s Itinerary

My trip began at a leisurely pace. The first day I drove north through West Virginia, then east through Maryland and into Pennsylvania. In Hershey, PA the workers of the chocolate company were on strike. They were out on picket line as I drove through town.

The next day was bright and beautiful. The way to the Landis Farm Museum in Lancaster County, along country roads, was a constant panorama of tranquil farms, old stone houses and old stone fences through the woods. Landis Farm Museum was pleasant and offered a good chance to see different sorts of old buildings and some old hardware.

From Lancaster County I drove, still through lovely countryside (swinging widely to the north of New York city), to Cromwell, Connecticut, for a visit with my friends at Horton Brasses. It surprised me to note how many trees and how much un-built-upon land are in Connecticut.

In Massachusetts I visited Historic Deerfield which has many houses and displays. Most of what is to be seen must be seen with a tour guide. It’s a good idea to go in the morning and plan to spend the day if you want to see everything.

From Massachusetts my road led north into the Green Mountain State, Vermont. I filled my eyes with beauty while I was there, making stops in North Bennington, Rutland, Castleton and Woodstock. The old stone fences running through the woods remained a constant feature of the landscape from Pennsylvania through Vermont. It was a most pleasant vacation.
