How to Make a Hinge leaf graphicleaf graphicleaf graphic

We make three sizes of butterfly (also called dovetail) hinges in Molly's shop. These are small hinges for cabinet doors based on a style popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. We took photographs while we were working on some hinges.

blacksmith notes graphicWe’ve added a description of the process, and for blacksmiths offer more information about tools and processes. Click on the Blacksmith Notes graphic to take you to that information for that section.

We hope you enjoy this description of making a hinge and are especially interested in feedback on how to make the presentation better. Let us know if the information is (or is not) clear, if there is too much, or too little, and if you would like to see more sections on the site about things that are made in Molly’s shop. Send a note to us.

See how a hinge is made.
