Oh, it's been a frightful hard time, and I just can't help
but say.
"If I hadn't fought against the bloody war, then I
wouldn't be alive today
And I got my education in the college and the streets,
Where I learned it's few and far between, the honest man you
meet
Oh the city's bright and dirty, but the money rolls and
flows
And the city girls with their pretty curls and fancy
floozy clothes
Come steppin' down on the boulevard in a six-inch high stacked
heel
She'd have trouble walkin' my country road, for a thousand
dollar bill
In the hurly-burly barrel-house with the roachesand the
rats
Where I'd hum refrains, pick my brain, sing and pass the
hat
Where the people all were rowdy, hearing nothin' that was
said
Where my thoughts and words just passed unheard thru the
buzzin' in their heads
Oh the mountains wild and rocky, with the twisted narrow
road
But I've seen more good times in these hills, than any
times I knowed
Where the women they were pretty & downright sassy too
They'd sing and dance and make romance and pass the
"mountain dew"
Oh it's been a frightful hard time and I just can't help but
cry
If it hadn't been for the way I've lived, then I wouldn't be
afraid to die
And I got my education in the woods and in the sheets
Where I learned it's few and far between, the honest girl you
meet
Back-roads people, don't drive no Cadillac...
Pick-up Truck,
carry them there and back
Back-roads people don't drive no Cadillac
Back-roads people, learn to touch the Earth...
Air and water,
they know exactly what it's worth
Back-roads people learn to touch the Earth
Back-roads people, they ain't got no voices...
Hands and
faces, speak to tell their choices
Back-roads people never have a voice
Back-roads people, don't drive no Cadillac...
Pick-up truck
(4x4) gonna carry them there and back
yeah, back-roads people don't drive, back-roads people don't
drive,
back-roads people don't drive....no Cadillac !!!
Down on Tucker's Creek where I was partly raised, you know the
bottoms lie so green
Sweet sister Rose's bottom laid the best I'd ever seen
The guitars hummed, the fiddles sang, we strummed the old
banjo
Cocaine and country music and my sweet sister Rose
My head was light as summer wine, my feet were lighter still
We danced benieth the moon and stars among these rolling hills
With the music ringing in my ears and a numbness in my nose
Cocaine and country music, and my sweet sister Rose
Now I've been here and I've been there, I've been up and I've
been down
But I ain't never seen the likes of the happiness we found
It's the closest combination to heaven that this boy'd seen
Sweet sister Rose, a country tune, and a snort of good cocaine
Now when I get old and loose all my teeth, and my hair has
turned to gray
And all the passions of my sweet sweet youth have long since
slipped away
One memory I'll treasure dear though the years may come and go
Cocaine and country music and my sweet sister Rose... Give me
one more time !!
Cocaine and country music and my sweet sweet sister Rose
