ROCK GARDENS

These can come in many forms - the classic alpine replication; plantings in and around a rock wall or old foundation or a constructed garden often with small ponds and running water.  Though usually in sunny area there are small shade lovers that would work well in a rocky, wooded area.  When choosing a location, avoid a southern exposure.  The shallow roots of these plants can easily dry out in the intense heat of summer.  Remember that alpine plants are native much higher elevation and cooler temperatures.  If you're planting a large area, consider using some dwarf shrubs,  taller perennials or grasses and large rocks to establish the foundation of the garden.

Maintaining your rock garden is not much different than caring for any garden.  Check the plants in early spring for frost heaving. Again the shallow  roots can easily be push out of the ground and dry out.  Also look for air pockets that may develop as dirt settles in around rocks and crevices.  A light application of fertilizer in early spring will be helpful.  Many of the spring bloomer can get leggy during the summer.  You can avoid this by cutting the branches back to encourage new growth and a more compact appearance.  If the garden is exposed to winter winds you may want to cover it with evergreen branches - cut up your Christmas tree - for added protection.
